What is genocide?
  • Acts committed with intent to destroy in whole or part, a national, ethnical, racial, or relgious group
  • This is can be by:
  • Killing members of a group
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of a group
  • Intenting to inflict on group conditions to bring physical destruction in parts or wholes
  • Imposing measures to prevent births in group
Rwandan Genocide
  • Started when the Rwandan president and Hutu president were assasinated
  • Rwandan ambassador from U.S reported to U.S. that genocide was going on and so U.S. evacuated all American citizens
  • Lasted about 100 days from April 6 through mid-July 1994
  • U.S. wasn't very involved in peacekeeping
  • Canada led the UN peacekeeping
  • Involved to main extremist groups the Interhamwe and the Impuzamugambi

  • 500,000 Tutis and thousands of moderate Hutus died
  • Estimates put death toll between 800,000-1,000,000
  • Many people fled fearing reprisals
  • Genocide still continued even after it was believed to be the end
  • This triggered the 1st and 2nd Congo Wars

Darfuran Genocide
  • Armed conflict
  • In Darfur region in western Sudan
  • Mainly between the Janjaweed
  • Sudanese government supported Janjaweed and provided assistance with attacks
  • Mainly targeted the Fur, Zaghawa, and Massaleit ethic groups
  • Began in July 2003
  • When the fighting worsened UN Security Council sen 17,300 troops
  • They joined forces with an African Union Mission Army
  • A ill-equipped 7,000 soldier peacekeeping force
  • Sudan announced that any peacekeeping forces would be seen as foreign invaders
  • Sudan launced a major military offense into the area
  • Sudan failed to attend UN Peacekeeping meetings
  • Supposedly an agreement was made but Sudan denyed it
  • Many organizations agreed that this genocide killed anywhere from 50,000 to 2,000,000 people
