  • The Holocaust was the murder of 6 million Jews.
  • The Holocaust occurred durring World War II.
  • Holocaust is of greek orgin meaning sacrifice by fire
  • By may of 1945 2 out of 3 jews were murdered.
  • Other groups were also targeted; Gypsies, the disabled, and homsexuals.
  • The Nazis party came to power in January of 1933.

SACHSENHAUSEN
  • Was established in 1936
  • Located at the edge of Berlin
  • Was originally a training center for SS officers
  • Named after the Sachsenhausen quarter, part of the town of Oranienburg
  • Was not originally designed as a death camp
  • 200,000 people passed through Sachsenhausen
  • Some 100,000 inmates died from exaustion, disease, malnutrition or pneumonia
  • Largest site of counterfeiting ever
  • Nazis forced Jewish artisans to produce American and British currency
  • Over 1 billion dollars in fake money was recovred
  • On April 20, 21 the camp orders 33,000 inmates on a forced march
  • Remaining 3,000 inmates were liberated by the Soviet Red Army

1. The camp opened on July 12, 1936
2. Located in the Berlin Area, near Oranienburg camp.
3. Had 44 sub-camps located near the main camp.
4. 30000 Jews were arrested in an operation called Kristallnacht. 6000 of the 30000 were moved to Sachsenhausen.
5. On May 3, 1940 1200 Polish prisoners were put in Sachsenhausen.
6. In mid-November 1941, the SS deported 18000 Soviet POW to Sachsenhausen.
7. Prisoners in Sachsenhausen died due to starvation, exposure, abuse, and lack of medical care.
8. Mentally and Physically ill people were killed in a program called Euthanasisa.
9. More than 13000 Soviet prisoners were killed in Sachsenhausen.
10.Prisoners in Sachsenhausen were subject to horrible medical experiments.
11.The barracks were made of rotted wood.
12.In April 1940 the first crematory was built in Sachsenhausen.
13.33000 prisoners were made to leave Sachsenhausen on death marches.
14.By the end of the war 65000 prisoners were kept in Sachsenhausen.
15.On April 22 1945 Sachsenhausen was freed by the Soviet Army
16.There is a museum at Sachsenhausen today
