Rescue of Jews
  • Ran an enamel goods factory where he would pay off the SS so they could work at his factory.
  • Kidnapped children from concentration camps to work in his factory.
  • In his factory everyone was given food, clothing, and medicine.
  • No one was ever beaten or hurt unlike the concentration camps.
  • When his factory in Plaszow opened he made a list of 900 Jews that he said were needed to help him run his factory.
  • These 900 Jews were then rescued from the concentration camp and worked in his factory.
  • This was the list that made Schindler famous.
  • When all the Jews liberated in 1945 Schindler had saved over 1200 Jews.

Aftermath of the Holocaust
  • Moved to Argentina with his wife, Emilie Schindler, and a handful of the Jews that he rescued.
  • Left his wife and Argentina and traveled back to Europe.
  • Tried to start up more businesses but they went bankrupt.
  • His business partners would stop working with him because he had helped the Jews.
  • One of few to be honored in the Yad Vashen Holocaust Museum.
  • Had a book written about him, Schindler's Arc, which based the movie, Schindler's List.

Childhood and Growing up
  • Oscar Schindler was born in 1908 in Zwittau, Moravia into a rich family
  • Oscar was raised in a Roman Catholic family
  • Schindler grew up in his home town and attended a German Language School
  • Schindler's father owned a farm machinery factory
  • Schindler began working for his father's company in the early 1920's
  • Soon after,in 1928, he married Emilie, which caused a break in Oscar's relationship with his father
  • Schindler quit his father's buisiness and took a job at the Moravian electric company as a sales manager
  • Schindler's new job took him afar
  • In his early teenage years, Oscar became an alcoholic and began gambling
Association with the Nazi Party
  • Oscar became a Nazi in 1935 mainly because many other Sudeten Germans were and also because he wanted to avoid being labeled a Communist or Social Democrat
  • Schindler was asked by the German Military Intelligence to gather information about Polish Military Activity when he visited Poland
  • Oscar developed friendships with the Nazi officers in the German Army and the SS by selling them black market goods
  • Schindler used these "handy" friendships to help rescue Jews in later years
Saving the Jews: Schindler's Rescue Mission

  • Schindler bought a kitchenware factory from a Jewish friend and called it "Deutsche Emailwaren Fabrik" which Schindler opened in 1940
  • Schindler began hiring Jews from ghettos because they were the cheapest form of labor, but soon, nobody knows what made him change his mind, he began a lifelong mission to rescue the Jews
  • The Nazis ordered that all non work essential Jews be sent to camps, so Schindler immediately went to work and hired about 150 Jews
  • Jews working at Schindler's camp were earmarked for Auschwitz. To save them, Schindler began his own "forced labor" camp, where all Jews were treated well and fed enough. This "camp" became known as the Emalia camp
  • After asking the SS officers (he had friendships within the Nazi Party), Schindler moved his camp to Brunnlitz, Czechlosovakia
  • 800 men were shipped to Schindler's new factory, but 300 women and children were accidentally shipped to Auschwitz
  • Schindler retrieved all the lost people and safely returned them to his camp
  • Schindler grew low on money and began asking any Jews with remaining wealth for money, in return, he promised to employ them at his camp and keep them safe
  • Schindler's new camp made enamel kitchenware and munitions to supply the Nazis. However, Schindler and his Jews (known as Schindler's Jews) made sure that not one bullet passed the quality control tests
  • When asked by an SS officer why his bullets were defective, Schindler claimed it was because of "start-up difficulties", but Schindler made defective bullets deliberately
Other interesting facts about Schindler
  • After liberation, the Jews in Schindler's camp gave him a letter explaining all the good deeds he had done in case he was captured for having operated the camp. They also gave him a golden ring made from the bridgework of a prisoner, that had a verse from the Talmud inscribed on it.

  • Schindler rescued over 1,300 Jews and was honored as one of the "Righteous Among the Nations" in 1963 at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Israel.
  • Schindler died in Hildesheim in 1974 of heart and liver problems.
  • Schindler was buried in the Catholic cemetary in Mt. Zion, Jerusalem
  • Over 500 "Schindlerjuden" attended his funeral.

Early days

  • He was born on April 28 1908, in Zwittau, Austria-hungry or modern day Moravia in the Czech Republic.
  • His parents were Hans and Franziska Schindler .
  • He was born into a Roman Catholic family.
  • At the age of 27 his parents had enough of each other and got a divorce.
  • After Oskar completed his school career and started work as a commercial salesman.
  • He tried a few different jobs befor he tried to start a buisness.
  • But because of the Great depression he fell into deep dept and bankruptcy.
  • Even though he was a citizen of Czechosovakia, Oskar still joined.
  • He was an intelligance person at Abwehr
  • But since he was working against his government when he was exposed he was sent to prison
During the war
  • Poland was the first country to fall to Germany.
  • Germany took jews out of their homes and sent them to death and work camps.
  • Oskar was married to a woman by the first name of Emilie
  • Oskar then purchased a enamal factory and made it into a factory to help the germans.
  • This factory was placed outside of karokov in zablocie.
  • In October of 1944 he was given permission to move the enamal works to bruennlitz Czechoslovakia.
  • Oskar would do any thing for money but that soon changed when he saw what was happening to the jews.
  • when he had the chance he would take jews in death camps send them to his factory and in a way saving them.
  • His factory eventually became a asfe haven for over 900 jewish and kept the out of labor camps.
