  • Treblinka was located 100 Kilometers from the Polish Capital of Warsaw
  • Two camps made up Treblinka-Treblinka 1 was a work camp-Treblinka 2 was a death camp
  • Before going into the "funnel", the Jews were taken from the train cars, separted by sex and were ordered to strip their clothes
  • Men were forced to run uphill into the funnel, that were labeled showers to trick them-the SS sealed the chamber doors and the engine outside pumped Carbon Monoxide, killing the men-the women and children were waiting naked in the funnel hearing their fathers, husbands, and sons dying
  • Victims that were too weak to reach the gas-sent to "receive medical attention"-they got shot at the "hospital'
  • Other prisoners were also selected for special working units-Sonderkornmando-removed bodies from the gas chamber and buried them in mass graves-they also removed gold teeth, dentures, and other valuables from the corpses
  • A rule at the camp for the workers was- if a person have a bruise on their face, they would be shot in the evening or the next morning when the bruise would show
  • Some Jews were transported to Treblinka 1, but when they got too weak, they were sent back to Treblinka 2 to be killed
  • Then in late 1942 into 1943, the Sonderkornmandos exhumed the buried bodies and burned them in huge trenches
  • These killings were so rapid, the gas chambers grew from 3 to 10 between August - October 1942
  • In late Spring and summer of 1943, resistance leaders decided to revolt against the camp
  • August 2,1943-Prisoners quietly seized weapons from the camp's armory, but they were discovered before taking over the camp
  • During this, hundreds of prisoners stormed the main gate attempting to escape-many were killed, but more than 300 escaped, but they were hunted down then killed by German SS, Police, and military units surprise the remaining surviving prisoners
  • p06.jpgThe remaining prisoners were forced to dismantle the camp and then they were shot
  • In July, 1944, the Soviet Union moved into the area near the camps,so they killed the remaining 300 to 700 people and dismantled the camp and evacuated before the Soviet Union caught them
  • Treblinka 2 was dismantled in the fall of 1943- Treblinka 1 continued
operations until late July of 1944
  • Through July 1942 to November 1943, the death camp killed between 870,000 and 925,000 Jews
  • There were three trials-committed at Treblinka-1st. Joseph (Sepp) Hirtreiter was sentenced to life imprisonment-2nd. Kurt Franz-chief defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment-3rd. Franz Stangl-commandant of Treblinka was sentenced to life imprisonment
  • Polish Government-erected a monument on the site of Treblinka-includes thousands of stone sculptures, the railroad tracks, and the funnel that is inscribed names of the destroyed Jewish communities in Poland that came to Treblinka that were killed
  • it is also a site of a constant pilgrimage

  • Treblinka was opened as a part of operation Reinhard in July 1942 as a death camp

  • Treblinka was first though a labor camp

  • The camp was surrounded by barbed wire which many people killed themselves upon

  • The second Treblinka was used for mass genocide and nothing else

  • The death toll for Treblinka was 780,000

  • This death toll was only second to Auschwitz 2(Birkenau)

  • Treblinka was disguised as a train station to making easier to speed up the killing process, due to people going crazy and jumping onto the barbed wire to kill themselves

  • Men went in the "showers" first and women waited in the next room and heard them begin to die causing them to have the "death panic" causing you to evacuate the bowels

  • when the gassing was over those who were still alive were shot

  • In August of 1943 there was a revolt

  • buildings were set on fire and the camp was shut down

  • After the revolt the camp was leveled and a farm house was built over it

  • for a lower chance of a revolt Treblinka was set on a schedule for killing people

  • Treblinka would pack 5-7 thousand people at a time in trains to come there

  • A few guards from Treblinka were recently on trial

  • The camp was divided into two separate camps Treblinka 1 and Treblinka 2
  • Treblinka 1 was a working camp and Treblinka 2 was a death camp
  • The prisoners were brought by train

  • The men went first and women and children followed shortly after
  • They fit as many people as they could in the chambers
  • Gas for the chamber was from two soviet tank engines
  • After everyone died they were taken into pits at first
  • They didn't have enough room so they started to burn their bodies and bury the ash's
  • People who weren't sent to be killed worked
  • They kept the camp running
